Description:
The term spirulina refers to a large number of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. Spirulina is a rich source of nutrients, containing up to 70% protein, B-complex vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin E and many minerals. Spirulina has been used since ancient times.

Safety:
Avoid with phenylketonuria. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.
 
Possible side effects:
Flushing and sweating, headache, muscle pain, skin reactions.
 
Possible interactions:
There have been no reliable studies to evaluate spirulina's interactions with prescription drugs. Possible herbal interactions may include: vitamin B-12 or vitamin E, protein, iron, gamma-linolenic fatty acid, carotenoids and vitamins B1 and B2 or herbs or supplements with similar effects.
 
Dosing:
 
Adults (18 years and older):
200mg-1.4g of capsules/tablets has been taken three times daily by mouth.
