Description:
Red yeast rice (RYR) is the product of yeast (Monascus purpureus) grown on rice. It is a major item of trade in some Asian countries. It is made of many compounds that are known as Monacolins, which prevent the build-up of cholesterol. One of these, "Monacolin K," is a potent inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, and is also known as Mevinolin or Lovastatin.

Safety:
Avoid if allergic or hypersensitive to red yeast. Avoid with liver disease. Use cautiously with bleeding disorders. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.
 
Possible side effects:
Abdominal discomfort, asthma, bloating, dizziness, gas, heartburn, increased risk of bleeding, kidney problems, mild headache, muscle pain or damage.
 
Possible interactions:
Lovastatin, cholesterol-lowering drugs, drugs that may be toxic to the liver (like alcohol), antibiotics, cyclosporine, ranitidine (Zantac®), drugs that are broken down by the liver, drugs that increase the risk of bleeding (anticoagulants like warfarin), drugs that affect gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (like Neurontin®), and herbs or supplements with similar effects.
 
Dosing:
Adults (18 years and older):
Capsules: 1200mg of concentrated red yeast powder has been taken by mouth twice daily with food.
